MUSIC BOX AT ST CECILIA'S HALL
Instructions: How to use the Music Box
The Music Box consists of a touchscreen device to link you to all the great digital resources we have to offer. Feel free to use this to explore the site, and hit the feedback button at any time to let us know what you think.
There are headphones available for you to use. Speakers are also available with the assistance of staff members, do feel free to ask them!
This unit is movable: if you need to sit while using it, staff members are happy to roll it over to the nearest seat for you.
A Skoog is also provided for you to experiment and compose with. Developed by a team at the Edinburgh College of Art, this accessible instrument has been programmed with the sounds of the mute violin, and can be played by pushing it, rolling it, squeezing it, and more. Kids and grown-ups are welcome to play!
Since the Skoog only plays 5 notes, we have loaded more violin notes onto the IPad and you can change the sounds each button makes. To connect the
Skoog to the IPad, press the button on the bottom until the blue light flashes. Then go to the Skratch app, press and hold the image of the Skoog until it loads and says “connected.” Play the notes by pressing the buttons, either on the Skoog or in the Skratch app.
To change one of the buttons to a new note, press and hold that button on the screen, and when it loads the options menu, press the upload button—a rectangle with an arrow coming from the top—and select a note from the notes available!
There is a 3D printed model of the mysterious mute violin whose story you can explore further on our 3D model page, linked below. Grab the violin and feel its surface, look inside! Be a music detective and use this reproduction of the violin to investigate the 3D model in your own hands!
